What is this?

Updated Income Tax Return (ITR-U)An Updated Income Tax Return (ITR-U) allows taxpayers to update or correct their previously filed Income Tax Return or file a return if it was not filed earlier. This provision was introduced under Section 139(8A) of the Income Tax Act to encourage voluntary tax compliance.ITR-U provides taxpayers an opportunity to report additional income or correct mistakes even after the deadline for filing a belated or revised return has passed.A taxpayer can file an Updated Return in situations such as: Missed reporting certain income Incorrect income declared in the original return Failure to file the return earlier Wrong tax calculations or omissions However, an Updated Return cannot be filed to claim additional refunds, reduce tax liability, or increase losses. It can only be used to declare additional income and pay the required taxes along with applicable interest and additional tax.An Updated Return can be filed within 24 months from the end of the relevant assessment year, subject to payment of additional tax as prescribed under the Income Tax Act.The return can be filed online through the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal. Taxpayers must provide details of previously filed returns (if any), report the corrected income, calculate the additional tax payable, and submit the updated return electronically.After submission, an ITR-V acknowledgement is generated.The return must then be verified electronically using Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or other verification methods.
