Overview

What is this?

ITR-2 Return Filing ITR-2 is an Income Tax Return form used by individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) who are not eligible to file ITR-1 (SAHAJ) and do not have income from business or profession. This form is typically applicable to taxpayers who have multiple income sources or more complex financial transactions. ITR-2 is suitable for individuals whose income exceeds the eligibility conditions of ITR-1 or who earn income from additional sources such as capital gains or multiple properties. This form can be used by taxpayers who earn income from: Salary or Pension More than One House Property Capital Gains (from sale of shares, mutual funds, property, etc.) Foreign Income or Foreign Assets Other Sources such as interest or dividends Agricultural Income exceeding ₹5,000 ITR-2 is commonly filed by individuals who have investments in stocks or mutual funds, have sold property, own multiple houses, or hold foreign assets. The return can be filed online through the official Income Tax Department e-filing portal. Taxpayers must log in to the portal, select the appropriate assessment year, enter income and deduction details, and submit the return electronically. Once the return is successfully filed, an ITR-V acknowledgement is generated. After filing, taxpayers must verify their return through electronic verification methods such as Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or bank account verification. Alternatively, they can send the signed ITR-V to the Centralized Processing Centre (CPC) of the Income Tax Department. The return must be verified within 30 days of e-filing. The due date for filing ITR-2 is usually July 31 of the assessment year, unless extended by the Income Tax Department.
